Amman, March 4 (Petra) – The Greater Amman Municipality launched the pilot phase of an organic waste sorting-at-source project at Ras al-Ain’s vegetable market to improve integrated waste management and promote the use of organic waste as a resource.

According to a statement on Wednesday, the municipality said the initiative focuses on separating organic waste generated by market activities and diverting it from landfills to treatment and reuse. The move is expected to reduce volumes sent to dumpsites, cut environmental impacts and emissions, and convert waste into a resource used in the production of organic compost in line with best environmental practices.

The initiative is part of the Solid Waste Management Project in Jordan, funded by the German government and the European Union, and implemented by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ).

Director of the Environmental Studies Department at the municipality, Bassem Hawamdeh, said the pilot phase was preceded by extensive awareness and educational campaigns for market traders and workers, detailing sorting procedures, project objectives, and its environmental and economic benefits. Follow-up campaigns reinforced these messages to ensure compliance and maximize project impact.

He noted that the pilot phase will evaluate operational efficiency, compliance rates, and output quality, while addressing field challenges in real time. The initiative is planned for gradual expansion to other markets under the Secretariat, using the same model and design.
